Have you ever wondered about having a fingerprint reader enabled laptop but you have recently upgraded a laptop or you are not capable of spending a dime now or your laptop doesn’t support fingerprint support?

This article is about logging into your computer (desktop or laptop) using your mobile phone’s fingerprint scanner and without any additional hardware.

Long things short, this trick can be used on any laptop running on windows and android devices running 6.0 or more.

Make sure you read our article on How to Create a Ghost/Hidden Folder in Windows

So these steps involve some simple tasks that will allow you to set up the environment and get things done.

  • Windows PC running Vista or newer
  • Android Device running 6.0 or newer
  • Internet connection on your devices

Step #1: Download Remote Fingerprint Unlock App to Mobile

The first step of the process is to install the client program on the android device to make the fingerprint module on the mobile to be used for the authentication in the desktop.

Install the app and allow the necessary permission for the app and head over to the next step.

Step #2: Download Fingerprint Credential Provider Module to PC

Since the Android app has to communicate with the windows client, you need software running on the Windows platform to streamline the process and sync in realtime.

Download and follow the basic installation procedures to install the application on your pc. If you are unsure whether you have a 32-bit (x86) or a 64-bit (x64) version of Windows on your computer, Microsoft has a quick guide on how to find that out.

Step #3: Lock Your Windows PC

Lock your Windows PC and connect it to the same network where the mobile is being connected and start the next step to start the pairing process.

Step #4: Add Your Windows PC to App:

Now let’s consider that the mobile app is successfully installed, the windows client is installed and the computer is waiting at the lock screen.

  • From the Main Menu select the Scan option to check the devices that are connected on the network with the client setup.
  • On the bottom right, you will see a + icon clicking on which shows three options, out of those, select the By Scanning method.

  • Once the option is clicked and everything before is done properly will show you the desktop id.
  • Click on the desktop id and click on the Save button.

  • Now from the main menu, select the Accounts tab.
  • Select the desktop id and click on the three dots and select the Add Account submenu.

  • Enter the login credentials of your windows account and click on Save.
  • Click Proceed on the next dialog.

Step #5: Login using your Mobile Fingerprint:

Now you are ready to unlock the computer with your phone's fingerprint scanner! From the fingerprint app, tap the menu on the left, go to "Unlock," and now scan your fingerprint on the phone like you normally would.

The GoodBye Part:

If all went well, you should now see your computer unlock right before your eyes like magic. I hope you find this article useful and thanks for spending time here!
